Hey all,
Recently managed to arrange to play AGoT with someone (have previously played the Core set decks with a reluctant wife to larn the rules) - can anyone suggest a few starter decks for me to effort out. I have a copy of pretty much everything (inc. 3 x Core) although would prefer to use something reasonably straightforward, if only to get to grips with the game.
No real preference on factions, favourite thematically are Tyrells, Lannister & Night'southward Picket.
Cheers!

Hi Spellfire,
Welcome to Thrones. I know that 'reluctant wife' feeling all too well. God, our starting time games learning the rules took hours, seen every bit we had never played a complex bill of fare game earlier. It's a steep learning curve, give nall the keywords, timings, windows etc. But man, is it worth it. My 'reluctant wife' is now an absolute fiend with Bartheon and tyrell.
I'm no proficient, but I would say the best mode to get your head around it all is the go on your first few decks relatively straight forrard. To my listen, good houses for that are Stark, Baratheon, Lannister every bit, while they of course have lots of potential tricks, they lend themselves well to dainty straight forward play too, which helps a newcomer ease into all the gradual complexity you can start introducing every bit you larn what's what.
I call up it'due south really harder coming into the game after iii cycles(yous said yu have all right?) as there is merely And so much to choose from now. I would advise starting with lots of the core cards and build up using the expansions.
There are and then many ways and archetypes yous tin build for each deck to so for instance with Stark, you can get a fairly regular (what I phone call the) 'Family' deck, or you lot can build around the 'Tully' type, or the 'Direwolf' type, or even the 'sacrifice' mechanics. Synergy is really important, then deciding what you want to focus the build on is of import. For case if you decide to go the 'tully' route, you'll want to go all in with that to a degree, so await for the cards that accept synergy supporting that trait.
Then I would say the virtually straight frontward Stark deck would be the 'family unit' blazon, so grab all the primary Stark characters (Eddard,Cat, Robb,Arya etc) and then add together in some supporting characters that give them buffs similar Septor Mordane and Maester Luwin. You'll apace start to run into the synergy happening in that location. Put in some stiff locations that add together bonuses and buffs (the ii Winterfell locations) . Also some of the economic system locations or characters. Then add in Water ice and Needle for attachments, and put some 'For the north' and 'Wintertime is coming' events in.
When it comes to how many you put in, put in 3 copies of the very best cards, 2 x of important support, and 1x of ones you don't demand to come out and so ofttimes. Then you'll demand some neautrals. Probably best to stick with the Fealty agenda to start, then only 15 max neutrals. I would advise always running 3x roseroad and 2-3 Kingsroad for econ. Then add together in Say Syrio, Superior claim, seal of hand and milk of the popy etc.(it gets pretty flexible with neutrals)
With Tyrells, they have a very strong 'summer' and 'knight' synergy so seek out those cards and plot cards that can enhance that. There are lots of 'buff - stand' type tricks you tin can do with Margary, Randy etc, and they have some neat events too.
Dark's watch has alot of options now, only I would say for starting purposes, build 'The Wall' deck and then it's focused on skillful defense force, getting buffed by the wall and Castle Black.
Deplorable I'm getting a bit vague now, I got pretty specific about Stark before realising you had Tyrell , LAnny and NW preferences.
Equally a general note, well-nigh people run around 32 characters(copies of non indidivual characters), and the rest is then quite varied to get uup to the 60 marker.
Hopefully the Stark advice tin exist useful.
Thanks

Welcome! I'll second the suggestion to use Bara, Stark, and Lannister kickoff. Greyjoy is also relatively straight-forrad. You could check out lists on thronesdb that use simply the Core prepare, so sprinkle in a few cards into each deck from the expansions and gradually add more expansion cards as you become the hang of it.

For teaching new players I tend to adopt using only Lannister and Stark. Y'all tin can build decks for these 2 houses that focus on a key and elementary theme, but don't directly counter each other as well. Fan's will have more names they can recognize immediately, and staying away from Bara or Targ means their games are less likely to end up in situations that feel "completely unfair".
I also strip those two decks down to forty cards and five plots, so there are significantly less cards to read and playing a couple games will event in seeing mostly the same cards all the time and so followup games experience more fun.
"This fourth dimension I'll save this carte du jour for when you play Eddard", and you know they will play it because it's a 3x in a twoscore menu deck. The games are more consequent and then its easier to focus on rules interactions.
For the beginner who'due south going to play with someone else who already has constructed decks (I think this was the crux of the original question), Lannister Fealty is going to be your easiest to pilot deck in a situation like that. It'due south consistent, has lots of economic system and large characters. It revolves effectually several very strong options, and has room to play more than safetynet cards due to the economy. I'd build it using the suggestions from Hypernexus above, but brand sure there are 3x Hand'due south Judgement in in that location. While that might non be in every deck, it's a great carte du jour to make certain you don't get blown out by some combo you're not aware of before hand, then information technology'southward great for beginner decks. You'll stay in the game longer and learn more than.
From there you'll probably be pretty excited to branch out, y'all tin can build more decks but make sure to keep your Lannister deck around for a while. This way if your new deck loses a game, you can switch to something "safety" and nevertheless have fun.
Building a deck you call back might exist "fun / good" without feel and then losing several games often convinces beginners to end trying to build decks. By having a safe deck and a "fun" deck, y'all tin assistance keep your spirits up most the game and equally you proceeds experience you'll become better at building your fun deck. Eventually it will likely tendency more towards a expert or neat deck.
And so you can go win worlds and design a menu!

To a new player I would recommend the Fealty calendar, as that allows y'all to explore the distinctive features of each faction before you venture into Bannering or other agendas. A rough guide to these distinctive features:
Baratheon: Kneel and/or dominance
Lannister: Superior economy, stiff character presence, intrigue heavy
Stark: Sacrifice, renown-based rush, high-claim aggro, deprival (mainly via Core True cat & Winterfell)
Greyjoy: Unopposed challenges, 1st player strategy, saves
Tyrell: Strong economy, describe/search/manipulating top of deck, renown-based rush
Nighttime's Watch: Defence, stealing opponent'south characters, choke
Targaryen: Burn (mainly via Danni/dragon synergy), high-claim aggro
Martell: Icon manipulation, lose-to-win tactics, longer-term strategy (mid to late game), plots in used pile, focus on Viper
Plainly each faction has a number of other subtleties fifty-fifty earlier alternative agendas are considered, merely this is what I'd be explaining to a beginner to commencement with.

Hey all - thank you for the suggestions. So far I'1000 looking at Intrigue-heavy Lannister (lots of tricks which seem reasonably like shooting fish in a barrel to activate). I also similar the idea of a Greyjoy deck designed to get rid of opponent'southward locations (and therefore reduce their gold/options).
