Orange Is the New Black Orange Is the New Black Review

Orange Is the New Black (TV Series 2013–2019) Poster

1 of Netflix's first corking shows

Alert: Spoilers

Orange is the New Black was i of the offset Netflix original shows. Luckily, it was really groovy with great storylines. When the show outset came out, it was groundbreaking. Information technology had a very diverse cast, all of which had not bad character arcs. Even the guards had good stories. I loved the flashbacks, which gave context to dissimilar stories. The kickoff 6 seasons were merely astonishing. Season 7 I think leaned a lilliputian too heavy on the social issues which detracted from the overall story. I also really disliked Piper and Alex in the concluding few seasons. Overall great show and one of Netflix's first great shows.

Not equally funny every bit information technology used to be

Alarm: Spoilers

Flavor 7 is going a tad flake overboard trying to hit all the political hot button issues. I'thousand all for trying to get the message out but every storyline deals with an unfortunate issue and information technology'southward kinda depressing. > You've got female genital mutilation, unlawful deportation, poor treatment by water ice agents to immigrants being held, the "me besides" movement both the cause and the effect and the validity on both sides of the story. The illegal immigrant mother getting her children taken away, etc. > I still like the testify but information technology has completely changed it doesn't seem like a work of fiction anymore. Its heavy and feels more like a platform for political awareness.

Swell...for five seasons. Watching Flavor half dozen was a chore and Flavour 7 was an ordeal.

(Updated later Flavour seven)

The story of your average early-30s female yuppie who gets sent to prison for 15 months for a law-breaking she committed x years earlier. Season ane Episode 1 shows her checking into the prison, and the rest is what goes on inside, plus the effects of her incarceration on her friends and family.

Initially I thought it was going to a female version of Oz, but it is far meliorate than that. Multi-dimensional: funny, sensitive and sometimes nighttime. There is heaps of depth to the characters. Clever apply of pre-prison house flashbacks to show what motivates characters in sure situations, and how they got to be in jail. Very sensitively done, information technology often shows how their personalities were shaped.

This as well serves to show that you can't simply judge people by their current actions - everyone has heaps of baggage.

Superb performances from a spot-on cast.

Then dissimilar to what I expected, and very pleasantly then.

Season iv continues the good work and was the usual mix of powerful drama and biting comedy. Maybe a bit darker and deeper than previous seasons due to covering issues of insanity, depression, guard brutality and prisoners' lives once they go out of prison. Some characters who didn't get much focus in previous seasons get more of the limelight, while others get less. Ane of the casualties is Pennsatucky / Doggett (Taryn Manning), which is a shame equally she is one of my favourites - multi-layered and funny. On the plus side, Lolly (Lori Footling) gets much more screen time and she is great: funny and sad, all at the same time.

The last 2 episodes of Flavour 4 are incredibly powerful and moving.

Season v picks up where S4 left off and shows that the writers had certainly not run out of ideas. At a indicate when most series beginning to feel jaded, Orange is the New Black was as strong and fresh as ever.

Nevertheless, Season 5 does marking a turning betoken, equally the show moves from beingness predominantly character-based to more plot-based. This is a negative thing, equally it was the characters and their stories that make the show so engaging.

Season vi is where the novelty starts to wear off and the writing starts to show signs of weakness. The setting and situation were new: the Max side of the prison, complete with the more than limited freedom information technology presents, plus grittier, more dangerous characters. This made for some interesting possibilities and the writers used these adequately well.

All the same, the character engagement, normally OITNB'due south strongest feature, is now largely missing. Tasha Jefferson is the merely graphic symbol whose story is worth following, and this gets drawn out to the nth caste. Piper Chapman, being irritating (though I think this was more due to Taylor Schilling'due south functioning than anything else), was never worth supporting and this season is no exception. She does, however, provide the most emotional moment of the season.

The lack of engagement in the season is largely due to some previously-likeable/interesting characters being fabricated into irritating characters. The over-the-topness of Red and Lorna's dialogue and general drama constantly made me tune out whenever they appeared.

There are a host of new characters but none are worth supporting. Their introduction besides dilutes the impact of the characters and stories you do intendance about.

Overall Season half-dozen was watchable but it did feel similar a chore at times.

The downward trajectory continues in the final season, Season 7. By now it is all plot-based and the engagement levels are close to zero. The plots themselves feel similar retreads of old ones: there'south very little new nether the dominicus. The transformation of previously-likeable characters into irritating characters continues. Lorna is particularly annoying.

In that location was quite a bit of potential though: several of the ex-inmates are now on the outside, so you lot go to see how the United states of america deals with ex-cons. This was reasonably interesting, equally you run into how badly ex-cons are treated by the system and how the odds are stacked in favour of them going dorsum to jail. Unfortunately, the central grapheme in this is Piper, and she's irritating, every bit ever.

The other area that had potential was the sub-plot involving deportees and Water ice, as this shows how the US treats illegal immigrants (brusk answer: not very well). Unfortunately, the writers ruin this past massively overegging the pudding: extreme cases, out-of-the-blue soapbox speeches and political finger-pointing. Rather than address the bug with sensitivity and subtlety, they're rammed down your throat. So preachy.

Season 7 was quite an ordeal to get through. I merely put myself through it to see the series through to the stop. Even then the writers don't make it easy: xiii episodes with a one.5-hour final episode! In total that'due south nigh xiv hours of my life wasted.

From groundbreaking to a complete mess

Season 5 is the perfect example of when the show needs to be over. First ii seasons were amazing, and then we saw a gradual decline in good storytelling. And season 5 has no mutual thread, all the old characters are not even given a chance to shine. The evidence seems very disconnected, likewise many ideas never course into anything interesting. Delight let information technology be the last season considering it'south borderline embarrassing. Pass the word to American Horror Story, and the new Twin Peaks.

Starts out great, ends up awful.

Beginning couple flavor were actually amazing, simply like a lot of shows, this 1 overstays its welcome and ends up becoming breathless garbage. Can't say I recommend it.

Pretty Good!

Orange is the New Black is every bit every bit adept as anybody says and is definitely worth watching. I was entertained throughout the entire series. Having said that, I think Wentworth is the meliorate show most a women's prison. If yous haven't seen this yet do yourself a favor and become bank check it out!

This has rave reviews and I'k really non sure why.

Alarm: Spoilers

is it because of the occasional lesbian sex shown in a very coy way ? or is information technology the odd flashing of a stray breast ?

This is not Oz in a adult female's prison. This is a watered down prison soap for people that want to pat themselves on the back for watching something where the word cwnt is mentioned occasionally and could been seen as 'close to the border'.

The characterisation and acting is actually fairly good and the lead graphic symbol is likable.

The problem is the saturated fatty instead of substance. The fact that you take to undo encephalon as well frequently to picket it. The suggestion that about all prison house inmates are mentally challenged only merely one is mentally sick and where the racial stereotypes are laughable.

The black population are a cross between whores and comic children's toys where the black doll has floppy hair and does high fives repeatedly. Their speech and patois is a racial parody for American white eye class to look down on. There isn't one black person with a brain or a motivation apart from deep fried craven and an impulse to dance at the drop of a hat.

A adept example beingness the storyline of the mobile phone hidden in a wall. It's being used for entertaining an inmates boyfriend by her sending him 'shocking' pictures of her punani. Just one pocket-size problem... how does she charge it ?

so it'due south not Oz, it'due south not shut to Oz more's the pity.

Show went downwards in flames after season three

Another show that was dragged out for too long. Really the offset ii season were interesting and fun, so information technology steamrolled itself to a terrible ending. By the fourth dimension it ended, the merely character I still cared about was Tasty, who got totally screwed past her friend, who should have told the truth. Piper and Alex, those whiny punks, could have both gotten killed (as characters) and I wouldn't have cared. Just another testify that didn't know when to quit.

To Outset Out With Anyway, Very Overrated

Warning: Spoilers

I am chiming in virtually this show because I am surprised at how positive the reviews are trending for it. After reading positive fizz over the past several months, I have finally had the opportunity to watch Orange is the New Black. And I am very, very unimpressed.

At present, every bit a disclaimer, I've but watched the first couple of episodes. So I cannot comment on the rest of the offset season. Only from what I did see, my observations are as follows:

The Good - The premise is undeniably compelling, even if it is for salacious reasons. The title is absurd and clever. Laura Prepon. A unlike role for Kate "Helm Janeway" Mulgrew. It'south cool to support Netflix's pioneering spirit.

The Bad - The writing. The atomic number 82 character and her fiancé. (Those are two HUGE negatives, though.)

I was expecting an intelligent drama. Maybe my expectations were off, or unreasonable. Is this prove a blackness comedy? It seems similar information technology at times, just the "sense of humor" is very lowest-common denominator, often employing very cheap-feeling shock value. Others have suggested that this show gets away from clichés...I don't know, maybe in some isolated cases, only on the whole it strikes me as extremely clichéd.

The pb character is utterly unconvincing, abrasive, and uninteresting to me. In the bad sort of way, the not-worth-watching another episode sort of way. Peradventure I am existence too hasty in my judgment? Overall, I tin can see why this show draws viewers. It is compulsively watchable in a certain manner. But not the way that deserves high quality ratings, in my stance.

I approached Orange is the New Black with an open mind, by the fashion. I but feel that information technology is not very good. Certainly not to exist compared with the best shows around. Are nosotros watching the same prove here? I applaud Netflix for the endeavor, only would suggest that in that location is huge room for improvement, based on what I have seen.

A Complete Waste of Time

dk777 25 February 2021

Some other evidence that started out fun and interesting only to exist ruined by bad writing in the end.

A show that had potential, fun and interesting characters, and so it'southward a real shame information technology didn't take better writers.

The cast is good and the concept is interesting, merely it's only not enough and very chop-chop the show becomes tedious and ho-hum. With such an interesting plot it could take been really neat.

An interesting concept, the show could take been peachy, just the writers destroyed it.

I'm actually sorry for the time I lost watching this series, it became so bad and tedious that I couldn't watch information technology to the end. The actors are not bad, but they are not plenty to save this catastrophe.

A consummate waste product of time.

This Impressive Drama Features An Extraordinary Cast

Warning: Spoilers

Orange is the New Black is being released on Netflix. I am providing my review after watching the first 4 episodes.

Because most of the show takes place inside a women's prison house, this bear witness features an huge female bandage, and it's a wonderful bandage. Taylor Schilling plays the lead, Piper Chapman, who has been sentenced to fifteen years in prison for her part in drug smuggling ten years earlier. Taylor as well played the iconic role of Dagny Taggart in Atlas Shrugged. Laura Prepon (That Seventies Show) plays Alex, Piper'southward ex-girlfriend. Kate Mullgrew plays Ruddy, a Russian émigré who runs the prison house kitchen. Natasha Lyonne plays Nicky a savvy girl who gets some of the best lines. Yael Stone, who plays Lorna, is a striking presence on screen. There are and so many strong actresses in this production that I tin can't listing them all.

Jason Biggs plays Piper's fiancé who must look for her release to restart their life together.

Orange is the New Black is a drama with potent comedic undertones. The New York prison where the women are incarcerated has an atmosphere that might best be described as sterile, scary and corrupt. Equally the women deal with the inhumanities of prison life, some seek small daily pleasures, a few hold onto their hopes for a better life after prison, and some are hopeless victims of the establishment. Most of the latter were victims in the outside world as well.

Equally the women are introduced to us, there are flashbacks detailing their histories and the circumstances that sent them to prison. Their stories are humanizing. The prison house employees also alive within the prison civilization where rules are paramount. They too are imprisoned during their work hours and must learn to cope with an insensitive environment that is also political.

Piper has to learn the rules and the other harsh realities from the first moment she enters Litchfield Prison. And then she has to learn how to cope, making mistakes along the way. Before she was confined, she lived a life at the top of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs; in prison, the almost basic needs cannot be taken for granted. Even the hugs are rationed during visits with family and friends.

Equally you lot sentry, I think you will find that your heart hurts for these women. There are and then many themes bachelor to the writers, simply central is the fleeting nature of hope.

Can love flourish in prison? I think we will notice out.

I rate this show 9/x.

First season was great, it keeps getting worse now

The offset flavor of this show was really proficient! The second flavour was okay, the third season was just watchable. Season 4 I had to force myself through the pain of watching until the end and subsequently that I completely gave upward, no interest left to lookout man the new seasons. This could have been a adept ii to three season show, now they're just trying to drag it out for profits only I'd be surprised if this show has even one-half the following it did back when information technology started. My communication is watch the first season and finish there. Trust me, it doesn't get whatsoever better.

Stupor factors should never be deliberate

Alert: Spoilers

The i star is for some of the characters in this, information technology is no dubiety full of talented actors and actresses only I find a lot of the sex, nudity in this series is put in there deliberately for shock factor and information technology overtakes from whatsoever substantial story line. Unlike Breaking Bad, this is not a dark one-act that is effective in combining profound serious bug with humor. It fails at this remarkably in my stance. I have watched other incredible films that revolve or have a primal focal point around homosexuality - like Brokeback Mount and Monster - these films do not come up across as trying as well hard to be eclectic because in that location'southward a holistic component to the entire story and its depth. They simply just tell the story and the story stands for itself. I judge what I mean is that it is pretty obvious to a viewer when nudity and sex scenes (be they same sex or non) are trying too difficult to be shocking or eclectic to increase viewer send and it gets in the mode of the story. It'southward just trying to exist too funny, too dissimilar and too deliberate with trying to appeal to men's girl on girl fantasies that the story loses substance.

Excellente !!

Whoah!

What a rollercoaster vii seasons have been! Never have I been so invested in characters on tv!

Yep it started out as a one-woman show but I think the creators rightly enlarged the scope of OITNB. Soooo many characters yet you knew them all in such detail. Surely even bigger than a soap opera?

Cried a few times too., not really.

Season iii is actually boring

This series has lost its way. It's manner besides focused on the relationship betwixt Alex and Piper (a real snooze fest) and not focused plenty on what makes these characters interesting. There is no spark here anymore. What made seasons 1 and 2 interesting merely isn't there anymore. This story is played out. Time for it to go! And Pennsatucky! Actually? Do new teeth completely transform a person? I recall not. By far the near interesting character on the show, Ruby-red, has been reduced to a total stereotype - of the crumbling tough woman with a heart of gold. She was so interesting before and now she is only as boring as all of the other characters. Most ho-hum of all is Alex. She was edgy in seasons 1 and two and now she is simply annoying - non interesting at all. Did they change writers or producers or did they but have i adept idea and they are stringing it out equally long as possible? I will say that Crazy Eyes continues to exist the most fun character to watch - played to perfection!

But I never made it by the 3rd one, I was so unengaged and well-nigh falling comatose every minute. The first season was pretty decent and I loved the characters simply by the tertiary it was a mess. Honestly, just skip this.

It's like the start few seasons of Weeds

It brings back memories of Weeds. Yous know in its glory days. The first few seasons before information technology went off the rails. That's what "Orange Is the New Blackness" is like. Equal parts funny and sad. A mix of true pathos and yet true honesty and beauty coming from the strangest places. Exist warned however there is enough of lesbian sex and if the "F" word makes your ears bleed it is probably a good idea to plough back now...This isn't OZ but this also isn't Disney. This is a truthful winner from Netflix and tells an interesting story not only from the master character's perspective but from the other inmates equally well. Information technology would have been boring to see things from just her point of view. Like Nancy Botwin on Weeds, quondam Piper Chapman is portrayed in not and so good a calorie-free considering she can be the villain in someone else's story.

Fantastic for most of the mode

I savour and then many of the characters and everything they go through! I'm simply now seeing the terminal flavor and so far pretty good although I think the kickoff 5 seasons were the best. Lots of wild personalities, intense episodes, satisfying wins, and keen soundtrack! OITNB is a phenomenal perspective of what it'southward like for women prisoners in many aspects. Lastly I love the excitement I experience from the beginning credits, nice mix of jolly and nighttime.

No more daily soap

Well the concept of women prison is something new and I started watching it with blank mind. Start is all in all mildly interesting merely as the story progresses there is not much to expect. The leading character, Taylor faces multiple dilemmas, most interesting of which is about her sexual orientation. She used to be gay in past but she has a boyfriend now..so she bumps into her old girlfriend in prison house.and then that is the well-nigh exciting part. But wait there is mild comedy too..she comes beyond a stalker whose weird acting is to be appreciated the virtually. The entire season is full of pocket-sized time accidents and fuss that Taylor comes beyond. Orange is the new blackness is not a thriller equally a prison based series should be but its close to chick flick. It covers every theme partly so, it is no more than than a regular fourth dimension laissez passer daily soap.

Alarm: Spoilers

What started out as a number ane has been downsized to a number 5 season 4.. Have not seen the whole flavour equally however, but the first four episodes are not nearly as proficient as past seasons, hence the rating to number 5 I major plot hole (spoiler alert) is : Doesn't anyone miss the guard who was murdered??? Thus far, Goose egg. Doesn't anyone on the staff or his private life wonder what happened to him? What almost his paycheck. What does anyone retrieve when he just 'vanishes' and doesn't fifty-fifty selection up his cheque!!!! Unless this is addressed later in the flavour, I will give this an even lower rating as the season progresses... Some of the backstories are non very interesting and merely take up room equally what's going on inside the prison. Wish the writers, producers or fifty-fifty some cast members would option upwardly on this and peculiarly WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT HIT-MAN GUARD!!!!!! Nuff' said except some of the acting is very practiced to poor....will not name names!!!

Quickly Degrading

Alarm: Spoilers

Season ane was a refreshing experience. An innocent educated woman sentenced to jail makes up for a bang-up story to tell. The plot is centered around Piper's troubles and tribulations in dealing with her new life every bit an inmate, it fabricated me curious enough to sentinel the whole season, and I liked it. Flavour one turned out to be very successful, the dramatic/comic entertainment value was undeniable.

Flavour two.

Eager to cash in in their success, the producers must accept felt the demand to extend the life of the series. Their arroyo is to develop coexisting characters every bit office of the main plot. Risky business organization!

So, we are no longer post-obit Piper, simply a bunch of other uninteresting characters that completely change the entertaining tempo of season 1. The intent is to tiresome down the show in social club to greenbacks in their success. The problem is that they have transformed an interesting story into an inmates soap opera. They attempt to provide continuity by maintaining a like comical arroyo to rough situations, and by the already established sexual tensions, mainly on the lesbian side.

I watched flavor 1 in ii days, merely I tin can't watch dorsum to back season ii episodes, I have lost a lot of interest as I feel manipulated past a degrading plot that no longer appeals to me at any level. I am half way into flavour 2, and I doubtfulness that I will finish it.

Hilarious and dark.

This bear witness is a seriously funny drama.

If y'all like 'Weeds', 'Breaking Bad' or prefer your humour on the darker side, so give it a go... you will non be disappointed.

Very few people create characters similar Jenji Kohan... and it is the characters that make this prove. Like 'Weeds', 'Orange' is fresh and original, and like 'Weeds' the atomic number 82 grapheme is tragically flawed and hilariously funny.

Well washed to Netflix on their latest production... 'Hemlock Grove' is simply weird, 'House of Cards' was hit and miss... but it looks similar the 3rd time is a amuse. Bravo.

(FYI: humour is how nosotros Brits spell humor). :-)

Too many stereotypes

Warning: Spoilers

This could have been a really good testify if the writers had really taken the fourth dimension to practice some research on blacks and latinos, instead of relying on stereotypes that are institute on the internet. I realize that when information technology comes to the white inmates on the prove there's a expert variety of characters. You have the meth addicts, and the hillbilly and the trailer trash, and the naïve blond haired blue eyed princess, oh and in that location's even a nun. OK that's great, there's plenty of diverseness there.

Unfortunately the black cast is comprised of nothing but loud, ghetto, uneducated and obese women. The but two who seem normal are a transsexual and an emotional disturbed inmate dubbed crazy eyes, because in the optics of the creators of the show a black woman must be a freak in order for her to possess some intelligence. The latina characters didn't turn out whatever meliorate. Their characters were all written to be women with multiple children past multiple men, oh yeah and big surprise at that place is a female parent and daughter in prison together. So freaking stereotypical that information technology's embarrassing. This show could have been so much improve

All that hype? For this?!?!

Orangish is the New Black is non the worst bear witness yous could ever subject area yourself to, however, information technology is far from the masterpiece the critics are making it out to be. Orangish is the New Blackness follows Piper every bit she navigates life from behind bars. The premise is really cool and Jenji Kohan is a great writer, and then I figured why not? Well, heres why not: the story is unnecessarily convoluted. One episode jumps from one perspective to the next without every really developing a clear cutting thought for what they're trying to show us. The first season, nonetheless, was more focused on Piper'due south struggle behind confined and gave a chip away about those around her. That would exist fine for i, Perchance two episodes but a WHOLE Series?? Season ii was very sub-par to the first. Inside the first three episodes, Piper is seen a handful of times and we start to shift our focus to other characters such every bit Lori Footling. Don't misunderstand me, this is non horrible tv. In fact, information technology is very entertaining merely it, in no way, shape or form is master class writing or characters. Quite honestly, if Netflix did not produce this evidence, I couldn't see it doing well on any network every bit with well-nigh Netflix originals that are not House of Cards. This is but a stretched out mini-series that hasn't gotten thinned out even so. At present, I know there are a ton of fans out in that location that dearest this show and that is great only I'm just non one of them. Like Jenji Kohen's other show Weeds, later on season 3, this will jump the proverbial shark.

The Memoir of Piper Kerman

Warning: Spoilers

Having watched 13 episodes of Flavour 1, I constitute this to exist a wonderful story about one woman's experience serving a 15 month sentence in a minimum security women's prison. Based on the memoir of executive consultant, Piper Kerman, this is a story about Piper, a young woman raised in a white, upper middle class family unit, who completed her education at college, and while looking for a job as a waitress at a local bar, meets and begins a relationship with Alex, played past the statuesque and pretty Laura Prepon. The two young women alive an audacious and romantic life for several years globe trotting and drug trafficking for an international drug cartel until they eventually role ways. And so, afterward 10 years, Piper is arrested, tried, and plant guilty of being an accomplice to drug trafficking and money laundering, right when she'southward settling down with her beau, Larry, played by Jason Biggs. And so, Larry drives his honey Piper to prison house where Piper surrenders herself to begin her xv calendar month sentence, with the intention of serving her time, and then marrying her fiancé, Larry. Just, Piper is a fish out of water in an environment that seeks to teach the hard lesson of conformity. The cast is astonishing, and the storyline well written, with skillful character development through flashbacks. The guards and prison administration are portrayed as corrupt and exploitative in a believable way. The prisoners are multi-dimensional, at times sympathetic, with loyalties that change depending on what is at take chances at that moment in time as tribal principles prevail. This story is about adaptation and survival as much as information technology is near finding dear in all the wrong places. And this really happened to someone. I would highly recommend this enjoyable series, and look forrad to Flavour 2.
